Bedford Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a program offered by the Town to provide residents and businesses more electricity supply options by pooling the electricity use of thousands of users in Bedford. The program is a Town-vetted alternative to Eversource’s default supply and other third party electricity suppliers.
The Bedford CCA program has been renewed for another three years through November 2024. More details are coming soon.
December 2019 to December 2021
Bedford CCA has a standard product, called Bedford Local Green, which has more renewable energy than required by Massachusetts. Participants in the program receive Bedford Local Green unless they affirmatively choose one of the other electricity products.
Disclaimer: A goal of the CCA program is to produce savings for customers, but savings cannot be guaranteed compared to the utility’s basic service rate which change every six months for residential and small commercial customers, and every three months for large commercial customers.
Products described as Green contain Renewable Energy Certificates (MA Class I RECs) above that required by the Commonwealth and come only from solar, wind, anaerobic digestion and low-impact hydro located within New England. Local refers to New England.
All of the additional RECs included in the program are designated as Massachusetts Class I. RECs are the accepted legal instrument used to track renewable energy generation and to substantiate claims of renewable energy use. Learn more about the RECs that are included on the Renewable Energy page.
Goals of Bedford CCA
Competitive, Stable Price
Using strategic purchasing, combined with the bulk purchasing power of thousands of households and businesses in the program, Bedford CCA provides competitive, stable rates. Please note, savings compared to Eversource Basic Service cannot be guaranteed because Basic Service prices change every six months for residential and commercial customers and every three months for industrial customers.
Support Renewable Energy Sources
Bedford CCA’s standard and optional products include more Renewable Energy Certificates (MA Class I), than required by the Commonwealth. This means you can support the growth of renewable energy generation in our region.
Increased Choice and
The program offers 4 different options for electricity supply so that everyone in Bedford can find an option that fits their budget and climate goals.
Participants in Bedford CCA may leave the program at any time without penalty.
How it works
Bedford CCA does not replace Eversource as our electric utility: they continue to deliver electricity, repair outages and manage all billing. The program offers alternatives for the Supply portion of your bill. See the Understanding Your Bill section on the Eversource’s website to see the difference between Supply and Delivery sections.
The program is open to electricity customers in Bedford – whether they are a resident, a business, a renter or an owner.
The program has voluntary participation and automatic enrollment.
- Voluntary participation: customers can leave the program at any time without penalty.
- Automatic enrollment for new customers: In Bedford, most residential and business customers are already enrolled in the program. New customers or newly eligible customers will be sent a Customer Notification Letter notifying them of their choice to participate in the program or leave before it starts (opt out). Customers have 30 days to make a choice and those who do not opt out are automatically enrolled in the program.
- Opt-in required for some: Those Bedford residents and businesses who have already chosen an electricity supplier other than Eversource will not receive the Customer Notification Letter, though they can voluntarily opt in to the program at any time. The Department of Public Utilities advises all customers of third party suppliers to check their contract terms as their supplier may charge them a fee or a penalty to leave before the end of their contract with their supplier.
Solar Electricity Consumers will continue to receive their net metering credits while participating in the program.
Budget Plan or Eligible Low-Income delivery rate consumers will continue to receive those benefits from the utility.
